Description

In a world where an uneven economic recovery is affecting the flow of capital, investment and growth, the life sciences industry needs to emerge from the global recession as a leaner, fitter sector, exploiting the changing competitive landscape and capturing significant industry value. Current business challenges such upward spiralling drug development costs and shrinking product pipelines are profoundly impacting how life sciences companies structure their channel and distribution capabilities to build competitive advantage and drive shareholder value. Accenture's findings from its Supply Chain Mastery programme indicate that in the life sciences area, pharma companies are re-examining their distribution strategies, with many considering or implementing an outsourced model. Whereas 70% of distribution capabilities were previously local and in-sourced, surveyed pharma companies expected 65% of capabilities to be outsourced and managed globally in the future. So is outsourcing a strategic move or a tactical decision? Some decision makers view outsourcing as a strategic move in which low-risk, low value-added activities such as order management, warehousing and transportation management are moved to a third party, freeing up the organization's limited resources to concentrate elsewhere. Others see outsourcing as a more tactical decision to supplement their organization's internal capabilities with specialized expertise from a third party.
